For 34 years, the Traffic Calendar (Trafikkalendern) has worked to improve traffic safety in children’s local environment. In the 2024/2025 academic year, the material will be provided to over 600,000 pupils aged six to twelve, 30,000 teachers, and around 1,500 local businesses and organisations. Involvement from local businesses makes it possible for us to distribute all the material for free. Information about children’s vulnerability in traffic is also spread to adults via their workplaces. The Traffic Calendar wants to inspire and support school staff in working with traffic issues as part of learning for sustainable development. Integrating traffic in different subjects gives pupils the opportunity to reflect on how the design and functions of the transport system affect our environment, health, and traffic safety. Having such knowledge increases opportunities to influence one’s own and others’ future. The ambition is for traffic education to be fun, interesting and developing.
THE FOUR CORNERSTONES OF THE TRAFFIC CALENDAR
Pupils
More than 600,000 pupils in years F – 6, across over 200 municipalities, get access to the Traffic Calendar’s extensive material throughout the academic year. Pupils participate individually or in their class, in seasonally adapted traffic-themed activities. Everyone who participates in the activities has a chance to win nice prizes every month.
Teachers
Among other things, teachers get their own copy of the Traffic Calendar. There are also lots of tips and ideas for how traffic issues can be integrated into different subjects online. The Traffic Calendar wants to support schools to be able to work with traffic issues as part of learning for sustainable development.
Businesses
Participating local businesses and organisations contribute to the Traffic Calendar’s materials being free. At the same time, they help to spread information about children’s vulnerability in traffic among their employees. Throughout the academic year, they also receive children’s thoughts and drawings about traffic.
Parents
Parents’ involvement in children’s traffic safety is important. Many of the questions in the Traffic Calendar aim to create a dialogue between parents and children. The Traffic Calendar is also intended to provide support when parents need to talk to their children about different traffic situations.
